  1. Yesterday I went to a car event, ended up talking to a lot of people there and one of them wanted to share his contact information with me because he might have had some parts for a car of mine. So he whipped out a pen and a napkin and wrote his phone number there.

When’s the last time that has happened to anybody? Who writes phone numbers on paper anymore? It’s a shame this guy was some rich fella in his early 70s and not a tall and tan woman in her early 30s, but oh well.

The event was in a city called Hämeenlinna, which is between Tampere and Helsinki. So when you drive from one to another you drive through Hämeenlinna. The road literally goes under the downtown, through the city. On the motorway there are signs that show distances to places, as there is everywhere. Such as [this one](https://www.google.com/maps/@61.1565045,23.9735057,3a,15.7y,161.4h,92.05t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1skV7os-0rPpeqtRnwIoapaQ!2e0!3e11!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D-2.046282827158393%26panoid%3DkV7os-0rPpeqtRnwIoapaQ%26yaw%3D161.39668578823031!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDUxMy4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D), showing it’s 134 km to Helsinki and 34 km to Hämeenlinna. But then, later on, there’s [this sign](https://www.google.com/maps/@61.0406597,24.3703242,3a,15y,168.23h,90.41t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s53L285Uk8mk5L728-3nqbQ!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D-0.40825466938746047%26panoid%3D53L285Uk8mk5L728-3nqbQ%26yaw%3D168.23330250675633!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDUxMy4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D), showing 108 km to Helsinki and 7 km to Hämeenlinna.

Where did that one kilometre come from? It’s the same road, how come the distance is suddenly 1 km longer to one? The difference between the two cities was exactly 100 km, but now it’s all of a sudden 101 km?

I know it’s probably a rounding thing, but I don’t want such a mundane explanation. I want to believe this is some quirk of quantum mechanics or something, that the distance to Helsinki actually suddenly gets longer by 1 km, somehow.

  2. I am organising stuff for work today, so I can be in sick leave for the next two weeks without a burdened mind. Wednesday is hospital time.

  3. Sometimes you see a person and immediately know that they’re a climbing bro. They’re basically entirely made of shoulders, big, calloused hands, on the slim side, casually dressed, and if you prod them a bit they’ll explain in great detail how they spend every second of their life out of the lab in the climbing gym and all the climbing holidays they’ve been to.

I tried climbing a few times and I do like it, but it’s also not a hobby I am willing to spend extra time developing. It’s just easier to put on running shoes or take out the bike. But people who are into it really seem to be into it.

Did any of you try climbing before?
