I think I saw the first Slavic immigrant/tourist outside of University judging by her accent and what she spoke with someone on the phone. I think they’re one of the rarer immigrant groups in East Tennessee. I don’t think I’ve seen a person who I could tell was from the Middle East outside of university either here. Western Europeans are rare also outside of Brits (that’s like cheating right?).
Or maybe she’s Brazilian, and I got it wrong because they’re also rare and can kinda sound Slavic. I think I heard “Da” quite a few times though.
I met a really interesting guy last night, working at a restaurant I was eating in.
He’s from Bangladesh and has been in Palermo only a few months,so we mostly spoke in English.
This guy basically came all the way to Sicily overland(and a little by sea,no flying), and the vast majority of the trip he walked…it took him almost 3 years to get from Sylhet to Palermo.
A fascinating story,we talked a lot about various places he had seen, it’s a very different picture from what you experience as a tourist.
