  1. You know how during a hot summer day, the air seems to ripple when you look over a distance?

Yesterday I learned it does the same when you have frosty air above water that’s barely above freezing. Makes perfect sense, but partially due to the term for this phenomenon being “lämpöväreily”, directly translating as “warmth/thermal rippling”, I hadn’t realized it is a thing even during winter.

Does anyone happen to know a proper word for the phenomenon in English? Online translation services don’t seem helpful.

  2. I posted my Hobbit doors art on r/LOTR and a lot of people want to buy prints 😀 It’s very flattering, of course, but yeah. In any case, it cheered me up when I was feeling gloomy and I am happy it cheered others up, too.

I am preparing a very very baby level lecture, and I am really enjoying it. It has really helped me to formulate things in a new way and look at them from a different angle. Not quite ELI5 but still.

  3. I just saw a video of a guy making a functioning lego typewriter. The possibilities honestly never cease to amaze me

  4. Here’s a take: Avril Lavigne had the most iconic basic haircut ever in the Complicated/Sk8er Boy era. Just brown straight hair middle parted, but I swear a lot of people could recognise by hair alone that it’s Avril Lavigne. It’s like managing to somehow be identifiable by just a white t-shirt.

  5. There’s a town in the SE of Sicily…Niscemi…where there has been a major landslip caused by the recent bad weather.

Many houses are very near to the edge of a precipice now, they have evacuated thousands of local people.

There is a fear that the whole historical centre could fall diown the hillside.

That picture is pretty scary,I wouldn’t really like to be living there!

  6. I’ve been in the habit of reading my parish newspaper recently, and it can be pretty entertaining. There’s been an ongoing dispute that’s technically a parish council matter but is essentially just a public-personal feud between a landowner and some of her neighbors. Whole articles are devoted to who said what, about who, and when. This is what we risk losing with the loss of local media.

I also just finished watching [Joe Pera Talks With You](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Pera_Talks_with_You). It’s a great little show for the winter season, only three short seasons that are free to watch online. I recommend it to anyone who needs something to watch to stave off seasonal depression.
