What would that vacation include for you?

  1. Depends entirely on what I’m doing. Spending a week in Disneyland and spending a week hiking in Olympic NP are 2 very different budget requirements.

  2. * $1,400 accommodation
    * $500 food/drinks
    * $140 museum/attraction fees

Transportation can be as cheap as $140 if using public transportation + short Ubers if staying in a city. $700 for renting a car for a week.

So I’d budget $2,200 to $2,700 to be able to have several good meals and ok accommodation.

There’s definitely ways to be thriftier and you might be able to find cheaper accommodation depending on where you’re going.

  3. I’m confused. Are you asking for a reasonable budget to visit the US? Or what we would spend on a vacation?

  4. $1500 – $2000

    Airfare, lodging, rental car.

Maybe eating out some meals. Maybe a trip to the grocery store if I’m staying somewhere with a kitchen.

I like to explore downtown areas in cities, hike in national parks, walk on the beach, visit museums, and other things that don’t usually cost much. I have paid to go kayaking, ride in hot air balloons, ride in helicopters, rent jet skis, go parasailing, go for boat rides, and other activities like that.

  5. Depends entirely on the vacation. A week in San Francisco is going to be drastically different than a week in Portugal, Mexico City, or Thailand.

  6. Depends on where you’re going. Cost of living(and thus prices) varies widely in this country

  7. Anywhere from $400 for backpacking to $8000 for a all inclusive resort.

    Need to be more descriptive.

  8. Depends so much. Flight makes things so much more expensive. Add a few kids. 🙁

We often camp with my family of 5 only to make vacationing cheaper. (I live in the woods and have coyote and bear and bobcat in my yard. I don’t need more nature so camping isn’t important to us). Camp ground is about 300 bucks, food is about 1400 bucks, extra stuff like chartering a sailboat, museum entries, etc is about 500 bucks. So 2K for a week when we camp on a gorgeous private beach.

I have to go to Florida to see family. Because we have to go when there are school vacation flights alone are 3500, hotels plus all their taxes are over 4000. We typically go to Disney or Universal ONE day. That’s about 1000 bucks for a single day. Plus car rental. So over 10K for a week in Florida. And the only thing I like about Florida is the weather. I do not find this reasonable.

  9. Well considering there’s few vacations that cost less than 3-5 thousand dollars I guess about $2,500

  10. Recently I went to Singapore and spent probably around 3000 in total (Tickets cost me like 2000) and I stayed with a friend

  11. Really depends on where, but I think my wife usually budgets around 10k per vacation for the both of us.

  12. Depends on where and with whom. If I were alone, literally all I want to do right now is sit in a cabin in Eastern Kentucky for a week, so that’s pretty cheap.

  13. Too many variables. If I’m camping in the UP, maybe $500 total including food, gas, etc. If I’m going to California, easily $3000.

  14. Oh man. Night’s lodging, local costs for breakfast, lunch, dinner. Dranks. Mild shopping. Transit. Mild attractions.

$250 per day all inclusive with some variable spending or savings.

Edit: that’s per person except for lodging since we share. Maybe $210 per couple, again with whatever variable spending. I think I was thinking $20 USD per plate.

  15. Varies a lot here, too. I’ve done both driving somewhere and staying with friends (a few hundred $) to flying to Europe, taking a Med Cruise, then spending some extra days (I think that ran about $5,000 each?). Both were reasonable, but one was a very rare, possibly once in a lifetime kind of trip while the other is a spur of the moment getaway I can do all the time.

  16. For a week? Somewhere between $500/person and $5k/person, depending on what we’re doing and where.

  17. 1500 plus travel and lodging expenses which probably add up to another 2000

This is for a non-local vacation that requires airfare

  18. $200-300 per person per day for a standard vacation.

Up to $500 per day per person for a honeymoon/special/once in a lifetime sort of thing

  19. I prefer to over budget and have remaining funds than under budget and not have enough.

We’re planning an extended weekend trip in May. Budgeting about $1500 -$2k for 2 adults and 1 infant. $800 in flights. Free hotel with rewards points, severely discounted rental car due to family member working for said company. Remaining budget is food and entertainment.

We have an international trip planned for later this year in which I’m budgeting $8k for just 2 adults. 10 days in Europe. $4k just in flights. Again using hotel points where we can and rental car. The rest TBD.

  20. We spend about 350 on airplane tickets 100 per day food, 100per day activities and transportation, 159 special tickets and 200-250 hotel or Airbnb per day for a city trip

A rural trip like near a national park or smaller town add 400 for a car maybe subtract a little for spending money and food if you cook in Airbnb

  21. Depends what you’re going to do. Both ($0 besides gas money or food stops) and $10k seem acceptable. Experiences would be totally different but both totally acceptable.

  22. For something like a trip to Europe I’d probably expect to spend at least $2,000 but wouldn’t be surprised if I spent closer to $3,000. Really depends on what I want to do.

Latin America can be significantly cheaper in terms of airfare and lodging, but the activities there can be significantly more expensive. Probably still cheaper overall.

Traveling domestically in the U.S? I’m probably still spending pretty close to $2,000. Hotels here are expensive and there aren’t cheap hostels like in Europe. I tend to avoid domestic travel.

  23. Depends on where I’m going. Road trip with my husband? $1000 for cheap motels, trashy diner food, and lots of escape rooms/mini golf/water parks/amusement parks.

Camping? $500 for gas, camp site fees, s’mores and hot dogs.

Flying to a major attraction in country like Disney World? $2500

    International travel? $3000-4000.

    Plane tickets have gotten expensive.

  24. I’m currently planning a week vacation.

I usually drive my own vehicle to within 1,000 miles of my home. I have 6 people, 2 adults, 4 kids. I cook at the VRBO or bring food with me in a cooler. So we don’t usually eat out. I plan 1 major thing per day (roughly $100 to $150 per day for entrance fees for attractions per day)

Between gas, attractions, VRBO, etc. I spend about $2,000 to $3,000.

This way I don’t have air fair cost… Just gas. I don’t have to rent a vehicle as I’m bringing my own.

It also can drastically change based on destination. Boston MA costs more than Kentucky for example. So if I want to be even more thriftier I’ll vacation down in Kentucky as opposed to Massachusetts.

  25. Way too many variables. I’ve done week long vacations that range from about $2k to $10k.

  26. 1K tops, but we don’t have a large household income (under $50K/yr for 2 adults).

  27. Went to Disney world for 2 weeks cost approx 8,000. Upcoming road trip will likely be 3.000. Biggest cost factors for just in general where are you sleeping hotel, Airbnb, tent? What are you eating (making your own, cheap restaurant or fine dining stuff?) Are you buying a lot of souvenirs/stuff? And how are you traveling? Plane, car, taxi? If car how much is gas going for? Once you know that, you can work out an approximate cost.

  28. My vacations generally run about $200….but I prefer camping and have all my gear that Ive gotten over years from tents to cooking utensils. A friend went to Disneyland last year, she spent $4000 for her and her daughter. It really does depend on what you want to do/where you want to go.

  29. That depends on what I’m doing, where I’m going, where I’m staying, and how I’m traveling, plus I’d bring my fiancée and her three boys. One night in Wildwood NJ last year was $1000 just for the hotel room. Gas, tolls, food, and fun was around $500 on top of that.

Granted, that was relatively spur-of-the-moment. Planning ahead would probably be cheaper.

  30. I usually expect to pay at least $1000 for a week long vacation.

That might be to the mountains and skiing, or renting a place on the beach. It could be a road trip to the nearest major city, and doing fun family activities, see a show or sporting event, and museums. We were just in Seattle and went to the aquarium, a drag show, and a live podcast, and that cost about $1500.

A big trip, like to Disneyland will be closer to $5000 for the 3 of us, and that’s something we only do every 5 years or so. It’s outside of our regular budget. We do a week long trip about twice a year, usually, and probably 3-4 weekend trips. Weekend trips are usually in the $500 range, but can be less if we’re camping somewhere reasonably close by.

Note that this cost is for a family of 3, but the major costs of gas and lodging don’t really change when going from 1-3 people. It does prevent us from flying anywhere that we could drive in a day.

  31. For me personally with $1k you could rent a car and enjoy a couple Airbnb’s for a week pretty comfortably. This is not factoring in plane ticket costs though.

  32. I just spent $4k on a cruise vacation to the caribbean, which includes airfare for 2 people. Most of my other vacations are < $1000.

  33. I mean what are you planning on doing dude? Where are you going? That’s gonna decide a lot of your budget.

  34. For 1 week I’d do domestic. Depends on mode of transport, and hotel accommodations. Would not like to spend more than $50/night. So max $350 for lodging, then costs of food(~ $40 a night) souvenirs(~ $30-$60) and attractions which varies would mean at least $700.

  35. It depends on where. I’ve done a week-long here in the US for about $350. About $50 for gas since I drove my car there and back, $140 for campground, and $160 for attractions, food (cooked a lot of it myself), and other small expenses.

If I’m travelling longer distance, then probably $2500 to $4000, but I’ll go for a week+ to make it worth it. About $1000 for flights, $1200 for hotels/hostels, and the rest going towards food, attractions, transportation, etc.

  36. The word “vacation” itself may mean something different to you than it does others. Some people consider a vacation backpacking or camping in a tent not far from home. I personally consider that a get away activity more than a vacation. My idea of a vacation is traveling somewhere.

Your average working class American doesn’t vacation in the traveling sense very often. We don’t get a lot of paid time off, so it really restricts what we’re able to do.

The timeframe of the vacation would probably be two weeks or less and it’s most likely going to be in the US and not overseas.

People with a high income may go on multiple vacations a year, are able to afford better accommodations and will more likely travel out of the country. What their average is vs everyone else is going to be very different.

Being of the “average” American sub category, I’ll give you the last 10 years of my vacation history and approximate cost:

Rented a car and drove 17 hours to Nashville for 4 days. Stayed in an average hotel. 2 people. Probably about 1500.

Rented a car and drove 2 days to get Las Vegas. Spent 3 days there. Got a hotel off the strip. Drove back. 2 people: 2500

Flew to Las Vegas, stayed for 4 days, flew back. Stayed on the strip. 2 people who didn’t gamble- 4000.

Rented a car, drove 13 hours to VA. Stayed for 5 days in a reasonably priced hotel. 5 people. 2 adults, 3 kids. Spent so much money on great food and tourism. 4500- 5500.

3 of those vacations only happened because family was sick in the area and we went to visit and used it as an excuse to vacation because we never get the chance.

I guess what I’m saying is there really isn’t an average when you’re only going once every few years when you’re able to afford to. How much you can afford/ how long you can stay is the first question, where you’re going is the second, not the other way around.

  37. I usually solo to Europe for 8 days. $600 for flights typically, $500 for transportation, $800 for hotels, $50 a day for whatever else. Usually costs about $2,000, I go under budget for hotels and transportation usually.

I don’t calculate food into my budget because I’d be eating at home if I wasn’t on vacation

  38. I fly for free, so flight is excluded.

    $300 for 6 hotel nights.
    $300 for food and drinks.
    $50 for public transportation.
$50 for sightseeing (entrance to a castle etc.).
    $20 for souvenirs (mostly postcards).

    What am I missing?

  39. For one person:

    International – $3-5K+
    Domestic (far) – $1-3K
    Domestic (close) – $500-1K

  40. As most people say here, it varies wildly with what you are going to do. I’ve planned week long vacations that end up costing all in all about 500 dollars (road trips with camping every night). Others that are closer to 5k (flights, hotels, activities, etc)

  41. A grand minimum. If you can’t afford that, no sense in going on a vacation. Sure, you can find a budget place and drive somewhere close, but less than 1k and you might as well stay home. Preferably around 2k for a week, split with friends and medium budget.

  42. Depends on what level of vacation we are doing.

Is it just a quick get away? Throw a few things in a bag, pick a spot and go type of thing? We can do that for under $1k.

If it’s a well planned, anticipated something we are traveling out of state for, it’s going to be anywhere between $2k to $10k.
