tl;dr: new friend who I found unusually easy to talk to is unable to have an actual conversation with me outside of calling or texting

I (16F) recently became friends with a guy(16M) through a mutual friend. We hit it off super well. I’m usually very bad with new people but we were capable of talking over the phone for 8 hours straight right away on the night we met. However, I’ve started to notice that it is INCREDIBLY awkward with him when we’re not online. We’ve never spoken one on one at school and in group settings he refuses to look at me or speak to me directly. I don’t mind the former, since I’ve never really sought him out and we share minimal classes, but I was a little curious when I noticed that he wouldn’t make eye contact with me and only respond to me indirectly to our friends in groups.

I don’t think he has a crush on me because he’s mentioned another girl that he wants to ask out. We still text/call regularly and everything is fine there. I don’t have a bad reputation within our social circle, so I think/hope he’s not just embarrassed to be seen with me. Could there be something I’m doing to make him uncomfortable?
