Chilling to know now that Turkey’s 2023 election will likely be its last free one for a while. There were no generals announcing they’re going to run the country from now on, no Palpatine proclaiming the empire moment, just a slow grind of lawsuits and political maneuvering to wear down anyone who opposed Erdogan bit by bit. I’m glad Trump is already 79.
I wonder how much longer Hungary could have went on before falling irreversibly into the same path Turkey is on.
I was walking at the beach in Izmir and saw a cart selling corn on the cob. Usually these are small carts by the municipality and people who are employed to run them receive a small salary (usually people who aren’t easy to employ otherwise). I was hungry so I thought I would buy a grilled corn. There was only one corn on the grill, and it was entirely carbonized. The rest were raw. The two men who were running the cart gave zero fucks and were just busy with their phones. When I asked how much it is, one of them said 100 liras (wtf) without even looking at me.
Somehow this felt like the summary of the whole country at the moment.
I opened the window to air the living room today because its really warm here, and when I came back. The outside, grey stripy tabby cat was sat in my armchair… I love him so much. I wonder who owns him. He’s very friendly, last Halloween he followed behind all the kids when they went trick or treating.
What I like about classic cars is the lived history part of the experience. Same reason people like larping or renaissance fairs or whatever. My renaissance fair is driving around in old cars. So I like to have things in the car from its era, and often country, which just makes it more fun and feel a little bit more authentic.
For my 1989 Alfa Romeo I had the brilliant idea of getting an Italian Playboy magazine from 1989 for it. Which I did, there’s a lot of articles in Italian in there I don’t understand and a fair amount of tits which is nice. I’m ashamed to say I paid 40€ for it. That’s quite a lot, but for the bit I felt like it’s worth it.
The other day my friend was in my car, browsing through the Playboy, and he said I should have some other magazine there too, a SFW one maybe. I thought it was a great idea, so I went on Ebay just now to look for a 1989 issue of Vogue Italia.
You thought 40€ was expensive for a 37 year old titty mag, these things are are like 150€ and up, and they don’t even have nudity in them. There was one, an October 1989 issue, for sale for 350€. My magazine buying budget isn’t that high.
So, if anybody has any issue of 1989 Vogue Italia hanging around, I’m thinking preferably September with Isabella Rossellini on the cover, send it to me please. I’ll pay for the postage.
My other idea was ordering some old issue of La Gazetta dello Sport from that year, maybe one that mentions Lancia winning Rallye Sanremo that year since Alfa Romeo and Lancia were a joint company back then. But I think news papers that old are probably pretty brittle, I’m not sure one would hold up in the car for too long.
