Hello fellow gents. Looking for some words of wisdom and to hear your experiences.
Going to keep some details vague but it should be relatable enough. I’ve spent my entire life in one industry and pretty much stayed with one company throughout. I was a bottom of the barrel to the top employee and eventually worked my way into the senior management team with said company. It was always a passion project for me and I never felt intimidated or unsuited for each new promotion I walked into. I grew to know things inside and out left to right top to bottom and gained a ton of experience in the process. Unfortunately said company could not stand the test of time in a cut throat industry.
I’ve been applying and interviewing for top level management positions in the field so as not to move backwards. Talking the talk, impressing the impressive people, recalling my experience with poise and exuding confidence. I’ve went to bat and negotiated a few times and straight up walked from the table because “I know my worth, I know my experience, this is where I belong now” etc.
Now I’ve finally been offered a job that checks all boxes and some.. and I am freakin terrified. It would be so much easier to take a few steps backwards and not enter a brand new company (one miles ahead in quality and revenue of my previous) and try to wrestle this massive beast in front of me. I know I’m qualified, experience being the greatest teacher, but for some reason I don’t feel worthy. I feel like I’ve bluffed my way into something that is going to be way over my head.
My question to the fellow guys here is this – how the heck have those of you with similar employment histories job hopped for promotion/increase/QOL or whatever and absolutely knocked it out of the park? Met all expectations. Hyped yourself up to do it. Made acquaintance with 100+ new people and formed a relationship. Possibly through the negative attitude associated with change. I’m just so overwhelmed at it I want to hear about some other experiences that ended in success or failure and any advice you may have when it comes to punching above your weight class at a brand new company.
Thank you

Bite of more than you can chew, then chew like crazy. You’ll get it done. Any doubters will give you the energy to prove them wrong
I’ve moved twice and my best advice is just to get to know people and be human. Empathy goes a lot further than it used to. Build strong relationships especially with those who either hold power (actual power, not titles) or are true subject matter experts (sometimes they can be both)! I also get to know the “old timers” who can give me some history and political insight.
For me it’s about spending my time in the most productive way for my goals
Im similar in that I always feel like the world is going to crash down, but it doesn’t. Your track record shows you have the chops, so trust it
