Recently, I have started to talk more to people in coffee shops or book stores, but most conversations are usually short, just an exchange of a few sentences. How can I prolong these conversations? Or is it just a numbers game, where I need to find someone who is talkative or in a socializing mood? I am myself not very talkative and not good at monologueing.

  1. Learn lots. Being knowledgeable (not just opinionated) in many subjects helps start and carry conversations.

  2. Yeah part of it is numbers, but part of it is depth not length. A short convo can still feel good if there’s real interest in it. Instead of trying to prolong it, react to something they said and ask one follow up. That usually feels way more natural than forcing 10 mins.
