I’ve always seen Notting Hill as one of those classic romantic comedies, but rewatching it recently left me with a very different impression.
The relationship feels quite unbalanced. She (a famous actress) makes decisions that directly affect him, disappears and comes back on her own terms, and generally seems to have much more control over the situation. He, on the other hand, is consistently patient, understanding, and emotionally available.
What stood out to me most is the final conflict: the movie seems to suggest they almost lose each other because of him… when his reaction actually feels quite reasonable given everything that happened.
And yet, it still ends as a classic happy ending, as if everything before is justified by love.
I’m not trying to be provocative — I’m genuinely curious: does this still feel like a great love story to you when you look at it this way?
