Tried to ask r/EnglishLearning but my post kept getting removed.

"Can I get [order]?" seems very strange to me as a way to order something from a restaurant or fast food place, and I’ve noticed it’s the most common way Americans order things.

In my native language we usually say something like "I’ll have [order]" so naturally I will use this kind of wording when ordering in English.

I don’t really understand the concept of asking if you can get a thing when said thing is literally written on the menu, like why are you asking permission to get it when it’s already offered?

I know I’m probably overthinking this and it’s not that deep, but I’m really wondering why because it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me as a non-native speaker.
