  1. Virtue signaling, international level:

Tesla’s door handles are found to be potentially fatal –> China all of the sudden gets interested of car safety, bans said handle style, and makes sure it reaches international news.

Many Western countries are appalled by the unearthing of a ring of child molesters –> China decides to use the death penalty for child molesters and makes sure it reaches international news.

On another subject: While the days are getting longer, giving a couple of hours of sunlight after work, apparently that’s the wrong time for bird spotting. I spent an hour at a tower yesterday, a tower where people had logged in 11 different species the day before, and I literally only saw crows and one common gull. But every day means we’re closer to peak migration!

  2. It’s becoming warm now in the afternoons, and only moderately chilly at night. The first flowers of spring are forming. I wish I was in a better mood to enjoy it.

  3. I read on another sub this morning about someone who ‘wanted to see what would happen ‘ if they cancelled their booked flight with Wizzair.

What happened is that..the flight was cancelled, and the airline kept most of the ticket cost as a cancellation fee.

Now the guy has no ticket, has lost most of the money and has a flight back home that is useless unless they buy another ticket out 😉

  4. I read that goods manufactured in Turkey are also part of “Made in Europe” now. It is great for us, but I can’t help but wonder if EU is trying to get in bed with Erdogan again anticipating a refugee crisis due to, well, our neighbors being bombed.

Also there seems to be a new surge of online friendship and solidarity between Spain and Turkey. I always liked our Spanishbros, I never met a Spanish (or Italian) person abroad that I didn’t make friends with in less than nine minutes. So, it is nice to see.

Yesterday I visited another institute, and we went for lunch. Too early! But okay. They’re a bit out in the open, and the restaurant we went to was located inside the local sports club. The clientele was above 70, and the food was… well. There was set lunch with soup (mushy vegetables in clear instant broth and soft noodles), salad bar (including my guilty pleasure, pickled peppers from a plastic bag) and the mains were enormous portions of schnitzel, fried potatoes with eggs and so on. I had broccoli Auflauf… casserole, I guess? It was fine, maybe a little bland. I am not a picky eater, so I smashed all with a glass of Apfelschorle but when I came back home, I decided that I still needed to walk it off. Luckily days are long enough to do that now.

  5. I drove past one of the small harbours downtown where there’s a petrol station for boats. Fuel at those is always a lot more expensive than regular petrol stations. I mean, what are you going to do, drive your boat out of the lake and go to another one?

But now that the price of petrol jumped up a bit, and I guess they don’t update the prices at the boat pumps when the lakes are frozen over, the boat petrol was pretty much the same size as car petrol.

Once the lakes open up the boat petrol station will probably be like 3€/l. Good thing I don’t own a boat.

  6. EU yes or no?

Is your country worse of or better? And was there a lot of anti EU before?

We now have a date on a referendum on continuing talks with the EU and now MAGA has its claws in our right wing populist political party that, according to polls are gaining a lot of support
