  1. Today I learned that furniture maker Artek grows its own wood for some of their furniture.

The birch grown in regular lumber production is grown so fast that it is too “fluffy”. What seems like a simple piece of furniture, the [Artek Jakkara](https://www.finnishdesignshop.fi/fi-fi/tuote/aalto-jakkara-e60-koivu?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=pmax&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=17416172557&gclid=Cj0KCQiA5I_NBhDVARIsAOrqIsbLIvDhGeRSGpON5WYDa0e6Dk5VhmSQG8qidseqvDjboUUsmPj_LE0aAgG6EALw_wcB), relies on high quality birch that can be bent 90 degrees, in order to make the legs. They simply can’t be made without access to top quality, slow-grown birch.

Some years ago, I saw a cross-cut of a window frame from something like 100 years ago, and another one made 30 years ago. The old wood was visibly super, super dense in comparison, and the book’s author stated that this is the reason people fixing window frames prefer refurbishing old ones instead of using modern wood.

  2. I am a bit baffled by these temperatures. It’s nearly 20 degrees and sunny outside.

Have you guys read any Andy Weir books? The Martian etc? I enjoyed the movie (though the microbiology part of the sci fi is a little meh) so I am considering buying the books as well.
