I’m reading this morning about the mountaineering case in Austria… where a man is currently being prosecuted for manslaughter after his partner died while they were mountain climbing together.
An interesting story. Is it well known in other countries? I read about it in an Italian newspaper.
The platform for bird observations run by Birdlife Finland now has a new version. They’re being run parallel to each other, and instead of one solid database, there are now two. The first one has a user interface clearly built on a pc with a big screen, and using it is a throwback to the 00’s. The new one tries to reach more modern audiences with a phone-compatible UI. I just wish the data can be unified at one point, as now I have to go through two services to stay up to date with what species people have seen and where.
There’s a verb in Finnish used for a certain type of bird spotting. “To bong”, bongata. While a lot of people use it as a general name for bird spotting, its real meaning is going to a destination only for the reason of seeing a bird someone has reported seeing there. Serious birders even keep track of how many of their observations are the result of “bonging”, and how many by spontaneous observation. I tried to bong yesterday to see a certain bird (the Eurasian three-toed woodpecker), but while I didn’t see one, I still got a lifer as I saw a Great grey shrike.
I love Asian supermarkets (surprise, I know). And I looooovee big Asian supermarkets. Like, the cornershop where you can get the basics is great, but if you find a nice, big, comprehensive one, that’s amazing. I found such a supermarket when I was travelling last week, and after bouncing around like a bouncy ball, I looked for some ingredients that I hadn’t been able to find in my city. The chopped fermented chilli was easy enough to find, but I couldn’t find the tian mian jiang sweet bean sauce, which isn’t very sweet and doesn’t have beans in it but okay. The shop assistant found it for me 😀 So I was able to make sauce explosion tofu. It was very good but next time I will make even more sauce.
Do you guys like going to supermarkets with foreign produce and trying out new stuff?
A couple of days ago I dropped my main sketch pad into water. After moping around for a while, I bought a new one. Sad for the drawings that were in the previous one, but at least I can still look at most of them, but the empty pages were mostly not very usable. Empty sketch books are scary. I need something to break the ice. Maybe I will draw a bird. Those are usually easy.
