Do Americans really spell ‘wary’ – as in suspicious – ‘weary’? Or is it just a very common misspelling?

In British English weary means tired…

EDIT: prompted by someone asking on an exercise forum "is there anything I should be weary about" when trying a new exercise… Just the latest in a long line.
