I live in Scotland and I recently overheard an American tourist talking about how much Americans love driving and you'd happily drive all day just for something to do. Is that true? Or maybe just true for him and a bit of a chore for everyone else?

it’s a necessary evil. i don’t love it.
I definitely do.
There are 330 million Americans. Some do.
I hate it
Utterly despise every moment of it.
I love driving, personally.
Probably just him in that case. A 2-4 hour day trip isn’t bad but I don’t know anyone who would drive 8+ hours to a place and drive back the next day unless it was for a family emergency or something like that
Some do, some don’t
Personally, I do love driving
I enjoy driving and sometimes get in the car and just go. But many people don’t like it. There’s no one universal answer like pretty much everything American.
We dont love it in the fact that we are excited to drive but its common for people to drive a couple hours to go do something.
Some Americans like taking a drive. Some like taking road trips.
I enjoy sometimes taking a long drive and listening to one of my audiobooks. It is only relaxing if there’s not a lot of traffic though.
Yessss I love to explore! It’s a huge country and in my 37 years, I’ve seen maybe 20% of it.
I’m a fan for sure. Especially passenger but I’ll be driver too.
Some do, some don’t as I am sure it is in Scotland. I only like driving if I am excited about the destination.
I have on occasion just picked a direction and driven off for a few hours.
That depends on road conditions and what I’m driving. Many middle class and even some working class Americans have a second vehicle that they only drive for fun.
I love it. My favorite thing to do is drive around at night, listening to music.
It depends on the drive and the purpose of the drive. Sitting in traffic as I drive to work? It’s a chore. Driving fast down the highway, on the open road, no traffic jams, music playing, with no purpose except fun, or to get somewhere fun? That is enjoyable
I love it if it’s a road trip (I prefer it to flying because I like stretching so much) but I hate it if it’s a daily commute.
If you get out on the open road and cruise with the windows down it’s a great, liberating feeling. City driving is a chore.
When I was a kid and my dad and I wanted to get out of the house we used to “go for a drive”. Just drive for a while, get something to eat, drive some more, come home.
I don’t drive unless I have somewhere to go, my brother will just go for a drive. It depends.
I like driving. It’s the other drivers I don’t like
It depends. Going through twisty mountain roads? Yes. Going on a road trip? Yes. Sitting in commuter traffic? No.
It’s part of our culture. Racing, muscle cars, off roading, trucks, etc.
There’s race tracks, and off road trails everywhere through the US. In general, yes we love driving
It depends on the context:
* Me commuting in rush hour traffic 2 hours & 60 miles a day for 15 years? No.
* Me on mountain roads in my modified cars? Yes.
* Me on road trips seeing interesting things? Yes.
