One day after learning that buzzards (Buteo buteo / Buteo buteo vulpinus) have started to more and more often spend the winter in southwestern Finland instead of flying away, I saw one! It was scanning the scenery for something to hunt on top of a light post, and flew off as I approached, showing its beautiful plumage.
Just a year ago I considered birds of prey a mystery, something you only see for seconds at a time, and wondered how it’s possible for experienced birders to recognize them so fast and reliably. The hours spent staring at pictures seems to be paying off, as well as learning about their biotopes. In addition, I’ve had three experiences of being able to observe one for something like 20 minutes as the bird has chosen a spot to stay in ambush, and I’ve used my spotting scope to soak in all the detail.
There’s nothing I love more than walking beside the seaside. İzmir has long stretches of promenade, being built around a bay, and the sea is about a 10-15 minute walk away. It’s perfect for getting sea air, watching pelicans and cormorants, and getting very tangled hair because of the wind. You can grab a beer or a bag of sunflower seeds and just chill.
I really miss being outside most of the year when I’m in Germany. That’s the worst thing about cold weather, that people are mostly indoors. It’s amazing how stark the difference is. Even kids are outside here till late at night if there’s no school. It’s around 17 degrees today.
Went with my mother to a restaurant called Centimeter, she was surprised I never heard of it because there are mutliple in Vienna. The food and beer were fantastic. She gave me birthdaygift, [Wiener Linien](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiener_Linien) plush pillows. She heard me talking about it so went out to buy two for me. Told me she went to three fanshops because all of them were sold out and the last one had some left. It was fun that we were both out of the loop on something and then experienced them anyway.
I’ve been watching a guy play My Winter Car on youtube and it’s so funny. I love it that My Summer Car and My Winter Car are people’s only experience with Finnish culture, lmao. I’d like to play it, but I don’t have a Windows computer and I can’t be bothered to get a cloud gaming subscription right now. Maybe some time in the future, the game is in beta right now anyway.
I’ve kinda been living My Winter Car irl lately, so I guess I’m good with that. I’ve had so many problems with my car this winter. First there was an issue with the carburettors, then an issue with the distributor, then an issue with the alternator which crippled all of the car’s electrics and now yesterday the thermostat broke. It occasionally gets stuck and the car starts to overheat. I don’t need to play a game to experience having to troubleshoot issues with my car in -15°C weather right now.
