For example, if someone decides to keep pressing it, it just keeps ringing. Shouldn't it be a one-off thing like in most countries? I am confused, it has become a child's plaything.

  1. I’ve never seen the stop bell being abused on a bus. It’s probably not widespread enough to be worth spending money on a more complicated bell system.

  2. The bell kept going off on a bus I was on recently. The driver stopped and asked if anyone was having a medical emergency.
A drunk man started ranting about how inconsiderate people were, until someone pointed out his head was leaning on the bell. It stopped after he moved and muttered something under his breath.

  3. That particular bus probably had a fault on the bell system.

I catch a bus several times a week and have never come across this phenomenon.
