I have really fond memories of shopping in Waitrose with my mother. I was always fascinated by the deli counter, the meats, cheeses, and other delicacies, which felt like a small world of discovery.

At the time, I didn’t really appreciate how lucky we were to be living in Surrey, but looking back, it’s clear that those trips shaped my relationship with food. I’m not a fussy eater and I’m happy to try most things, and I think those early experiences played a big part in that.

It makes me curious. Was Waitrose considered “posh” back then, or has it evolved into something bigger over the years? More broadly, I wonder whether where you do your weekly shop really matters. Is it aspirational to shop at certain supermarkets?

I’d love to hear other people’s memories of supermarkets in the 80s and 90s.
