What’s the dominant supermarket in your area that isn’t Walmart or Target?
December 8, 2025
And do you prefer it over Walmart or Target?
Here in Jersey, it's ShopRite and I do prefer it, but sometimes the other two can be cheaper.

Publix in Florida
HEB and of course it’s better than Walmart / target
Ralph’s. And of course, it has way better produce and meat and bread than Target.
Giant and Safeway.
In the Capital District (NY) it’s either Hannaford or Price Chopper. Price Chopper has my pharmacy, so….
Wegman’s, Costco, Safeway, Harris Teeter, Giant
All within a 10 minute drive
Kroger. . .which IS the dominant supermarket around here. It’s more popular than Wal-Mart, and the nearest Target is in Lexington.
Kroger is a decent supermarket, but they’ve let their de-facto monopoly get ahead of them and raised prices a lot more than they should, so Aldi and Publix have been moving into the area and really giving them strong competition.
Piggly Wiggly!
Publix
Acme, Giant, Shoprite, Aldi
QFC is a big one here in Seattle.
Rouses. It’s a little pricier than Walmart, but the quality of produce and meat is usually better.
Food Lion in coastal South Carolina
Kroger and Meijer.
I’d call Target & WalMart “Big Box Stores” not supermarkets
ShopRite is pretty much the only store I shop at. Occasionally Aldi’s, but I haven’t been there for 2 months.
King Soopers in Denver. It’s just Kroger under a different name
Food Lion
Save A Lot and/or Aldi
Pick n Save (a Kroger subsidiary), Aldi, Piggly Wiggly, Meijer, and Woodman’s in Wisconsin.
Honorable mention to Kwik Trip which feels too big/nice to be just a gas station convenience store, but definitely not big enough to be a real supermarket.
Da Jewels.
btw I’ve lived in several places all over this great nation of ours and never has Walmart or Target been the primary grocery store for people. Might be a regional, rural, or certain part of town thing, but they’re not the monolith (duolith? ) that people often hear about.
Safeway in San Francisco. Whole Foods a close second.
Meijer and, to a lesser degree, Mariano’s
Safeway and King Sooper
Giant Eagle
Meijer
Safeway, QFC, Fred Meyer’s, winco, Costco, plus some other local or smaller markets
Grocery wise, I prefer winco for cost reasons and Safeway for the weekly sales.
Wegmans
Hy-vee (overpriced) and Aldi (hit & miss on selection).
Meijer. Fwiw, I don’t count Walmart or Target as grocery stores
Giant in Northern Virginia/Washington DC.
Oh, about ShopRite, I have Jersey family roots and when I was helping my friend move to NYC and we stayed in Jersey, I pointed out to him the ShopRite warehouse next to the Turnpike near the airport, and he said, “so that’s the Giant up here, huh?”
Jewel or Aldi
Kroger but Walmart is significantly cheaper. Hard to justify going anywhere else. We have a locally owned boutique place for nicer stuff but Walmart is king for normal stuff. Usually include Aldi in the rotation too.
Winco and Fred Meyer (Kroger superstore)
Shop Rite, Star Market, and Stop & Shop.
Ralph’s (owned by Kroger) where I grew up in Los Angeles.
Cub, where I am now in Minneapolis
Marianos, Pete’s, Tony’s, Costco, Amazon Fresh and of course, Da Jewelz
Jewel Osco
In Oregon we’ve got Winco, Fred Meyer and Safeway.
Then there’s Trader Joe’s, and if you want to spend a bit more there’s Whole Foods, New Seasons and Zupan’s
Back when I lived in the NYC area, it was Wegmans, ShopRite, and Stop and Shop. All are way better than Walmart or Target
Star Market, Whole Foods, Market Basket, Wegman’s, Trader Joe’s, and Stop and Shop.
I really don’t think there’s a “dominant” supermarket here, it all depends on which one is closer to you.
Jewel Osco and Mariano’s. I shop mostly at Tony’s Fresh Market, a chain local to Chicagoland and HarvesTime which is super local.
Safeway or raley’s in California
Cub Foods and Lunds & Byerly’s (Minneapolis-St. Paul metro)
