  1. Just came across this Reddit comment by a user who I could only assume must have been Turkish as, for whatever reason, they decıded to wrıte ın normal Englısh but wıth all the i’s replaced wıth dotless ıs.

Doesn’t anyone else find it weird that it took 2000 years from the Roman Empire to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire for someone to say “Hey, why don’t we make it a thing to not put a dot on an i” and for literally every other language on Earth to go “Thanks, I hate it” apart from a bunch of other Turkic languages who adopted it into their alphabets out of…sympathy, or something?

If you’re wondering why the i ended up with a dot on it in the first place, let’s just say it’s probably for the same reason why in old German handwritten texts you often see ū written with a line on top of it, namely, u’s can get difficult to decipher in joined-up writing (or cursive, as the Americans call it) otherwise. Surely post-WW1 Turkish people must have understood that just because you *can*, doesn’t mean you *should*? Or did they think they were being edgy or something?

  2. Yesterday, a friend and former colleague invited me to her brother’s band concert. They’re a very musical family, she herself plays the flute. I thought, why not. The concert was at a restaurant kind of place a bit out in the country, so I went by car (to emphasize that I didn’t drink). When we arrived it was fairly empty, they were doing sound check and stuff. There were round tables and Christmas decorations. Turns out the band was hired for the Christmas celebration of a company. How fun! Then people started showing up, I had free food and the band started playing… German Schlager!

And honestly it was so much fun. They also played some pop and a bit more rock-adjacent stuff, but everyone danced non-stop, everyone had fun, it was great. I mean Turkish people even dance if the door is creaking, I don’t need like a lot of great music (my friend said she brought me because I can dance to anything) but everyone else danced, too. Maybe they had the benefit of a few glasses of wine, I don’t know.

Our Christmas get-together is in a few days. I don’t think there will be a band. Or fun.
