When I was a kid in Germany, we played soccer everywhere. We didn’t need a proper field or even grass. At school, during recess, we played on the regular schoolyard — either on the paved ground or on a patch of grass, it didn’t matter. We’d use stones or T-shirts as goalposts. If nobody had a ball, we’d just use a Coke can or whatever we could find.

After school, we’d play on a parking lot in our village, or on some patch of grass, or in someone’s backyard — again using whatever we found as goalposts.

I know soccer isn’t as big in the US, but is it still a thing for kids there to sometimes just play soccer in random places like that, outside of organized sport?
