Last day of the official inspection at work today, luckily! It’s a long and complicated bureaucratic process,as you would expect in Italy… procedures, documents and interviews with the staff.And also with some of the students.
Someone was asking about European foods in a thread, and a person from Ireland wrote something like “you should try the Tayto pineapple and anchovy crisps” (may not be the exact flavor, I don’t remember). I thought, Tayto is a funny name (in Turkish you pronounce it as tight-o, and tayt literally means tights). Later when I was lying in bed, I was like, what’s Taytos, precious? Then it occurred to me that it’s po-TAYTO-s. So it was a bit of a slow penny drop, I guess.
Yesterday I was at a meeting, and the admin lady was talking about a renovation that would cost so and so many Euros. Then she looked at me and said, “you can buy a lot of centrifuges with that money”. It was really funny. I mean, I had filed a request for a new centrifuge, but it’s not like centrifuges are something we need in large quantities. We’re not enriching uranium.
On top of that, there was a Cloudflare meltdown and I had to remove posts in the tens (not kidding) of people asking if it’s the end of the world. The internet is help by two pieces of duct tape.
I’ve let my lazyness win and started using LLMs (Le Chat, specifically) for doing chemistry calculations for me.
I think my inner grandma is taking over. I can’t not be nice to the little robot. Poor little guy is doing the boring grunt work for me, the least I can do is say please, thank you, and wish him a good day.
Are you able to not anthropomorphise machinery? I sure can’t. I pat our lab robots and say “good girl” to them before I even notice I’m doing it.
Checking a weather forecast system that has one weather symbol for each 6 hour section, for the next 9 days, we have:
24 cloudy symbols.
3 partially cloudy symbols (chance of actual sunshine, people!).
3 snow symbols.
3 sleet symbols.
1 rain symbol.
Looks like November in South-Western Finland.
