What are your opinions on pay-in communities for friend making?

I'm on the hunt for new connections in my early (f)20s. I'm familiar with paying subs to be part of a sports team etc to cover the cost of maintenance/transport/events etc and I did this throughout my higher education but its not particularly my thing anymore.

However on my quest for connection I've come across several subscription based communities (advertised on instagram/online), by which paying tbe subscription gains to access to further ticketed events, all boasting to make new friends, meet a great group of people etc.

Though there's nothing inherently wrong with this, there's certainly a need for it, and I think it's a great idea. There's something that puts me off about paying for friends in a sense. There's no guarantee I'll gel with the community, so it's luck of the draw if I pick the right one in the first place. Also, it's a lot of money to fork out £5-£20 p/m to join, then up to another £20 for the event tickets.

Of course, these events will cost money so the ticket cost is fine and the people to run then need to be paid too! I just feel funny and slightly elitist or desperate to pay to join a group of people for access to possible friends.

Any opinions?
