I am a young Australian (32) dating a Malaysian chinese girl and we have seen each other many times. The way we did it was we essentially took turns covering the bill. Sometimes, I will ask/hint "hey do you want to get this one?" However, I have been covering 70 – 80% of the bill on average.
Recently, we were planning to go to the hotel and spend the night since we don't have our own places. And, I mentioned that if this is a regular thing, perhaps she can cover half of the hotel bill (after the first one) but I am happy to pay for the first one.
Today she said that it is too direct for me to ask like this. And, she is very angry. She said that I don't have to ask her like that and she will cover when it is her "turn". And, she said that in malaysia, the boy tends to pay for everything.
To me, spending night at a hotel regularly (say weekly) is too expensive and I am not able to cover it all the time if it's on a weekly basis.
So, what is the best way to go about this situation?
