If you look at nationwide crime stats from 1960 onwards, the 70s, 80s, and early 90s were a particularly crime ridden period compared to other eras.

Violent crime peaked in 1991, homicide rates peaked in 1980, property crime peaked in 1981, robbery rates peaked in 1980, burglaries peaked in 1980, and car theft peaked in 1990.

These rates were significantly higher than the 60s proceeding it and the mid-90s to present day succeeding it.
