I (19 M) am a college freshman. One day I went to class, only to find out that it had been cancelled. A girl from my class had also mistakenly come. I generally do not like to go to social events, but I do like making friends and engaging in occasional small talk. I make a funny remark about me having to check my email more often as not to come to a cancelled class in the future. We chit-chat for a while.
Now I have about 2 hours of leisure time I do not know what to do with. I want to talk about my plans for the day, but first I want to ask her for hers, because it is rude to only talk about oneself. I ask: "What are you doing after this". I immediately notice my blunder, as the look in her eyes instantly changes. I have fucked up big time. We're both leaving, and I notice that, despite her being quite a bit shorter than me, is going past me. She is fucking speed walking to get away. I am mortified, but try to save face by asking her some neutral questions about the class. At the door, she fumbles with the lock like a soon-to-be-victim in a slasher film. Before we part, I try to say one last "Bye" to seem at least cordial.
I later learn that this time of year is known as "the red zone", during which most SA cases concerning freshmen occur. Statistically speaking, she was right to be afraid. I cannot put this behind me. Was I in the wrong? How do I approach the situation going forward? Am I going to be known as a creepy guy? I just wanted to make a friend.
