Before you conclude that I've watched too many westerns, I'm also an American and will answer for myself in a comment (per sub rules). Also, which state are you in?

  1. When I lived in western New York all the time.

When I visit my family in southeast Pennsylvania I’m likely to see some too.

Now that I’m in greater Atlanta never.

  2. Never because that would have all the drawbacks of horses and cars at the same time

  3. We have an Amish community nearby (in NY), so it’s not unusual to see a horse and buggy on the road or in the store parking lot. I’ve never seen anyone traveling along the road on a single horse, though.

  4. Never. I live in the city. I went camping up in Amish country in Wisconsin this summer and saw lots of horses and buggies, though!

  5. Used to see it fairly often when I was young, but we don’t have any Old Order Mennonites now. There is a community about 20 minutes away.

  6. South western Ohio and never.

Wait, I did see someone on a horse, but they were in a parade.

  7. I grew up in Oklahoma and people still drive wagons for parades and historical re-enactments.
Sometimes we would see them practicing and doing work with the horses to get them used to cars and noise.

But in terms of like riding a horse to the store? Never. This is not something that happens outside of very specific Amish country or other similar groups.

  8. Couple Amish communities in my state that I occasionally drive through but nothing beyond that

  9. Every month or two. I live close e enough to go to Lancaster, Pennsylvania for a day trip.

  10. About a week ago (although I can’t say they were heading into town) – central PA

  11. A few times a year, when we go to Dutch Wonderland or travel through Amish country for another reason.

  12. There was a decent sized Amish population in northern Ohio.  Would see the horse n buggy frequently.  Crazy thing is they would be on the road in 55 zone just occupying the lane.  Dangerous

  13. Lol never. I’ll never forget visiting Ireland and when I told the cab driver I’m from Colorado, he asked if we rode horses everywhere. Spoiler: no.

  14. I used to live near Amish and Mennonites. We would see them almost daily. They still do. Was neat to see them go to Sam’s club, stock up and transport it all on the horse drawn buggy.

  15. Grew up in rural NC and once in a while Seymour would hook his donkey up to his car (missing windshields and windows and was on wooden chuck wagon wheels instead of standard car wheels) and go off to god knows where. That’s the best I got

  16. Ive never seen it in my life though it would be cool if they could do it in a way that a car wouldn’t destroy them

  17. I have never seen someone coming into town on a horse and buggy anywhere that I’ve lived in the USA (Queens, Brooklyn, Nashville, Memphis, Little Rock, New Orleans, DC, SF).

I have seen people driving around in horse and buggy in rural Pennsylvania and West Virginia when I was passing through – probably a few other places, too. How many times have I seen this? Maybe 5-10 times when driving through Amish country.

  18. I see folks riding horses *around* town fairly often, but I live in horse country and thats just people taking their animals out for some exercise/training.

Never seen anyone riding a horse and buggy because I don’t live in Amish country.

  19. I’m Pennsylvanian. Lancaster County and southeastern York county is home to a lot of Amish, they use horses a lot. Some other people do ride horses but it’s generally for fun.

  20. Maybe once or twice a year. We have Amish and Old Order Mennonites here in Virginia, but not in the places where I spent most of my time.

  21. I live in Pennsylvania on the New York border. There is a huge Amish presence right over the NY line. Most every day as they come here to shop.

  22. I live in a rural area in West Central Florida. When I was a kid/before I had a car, I rode my pony or horse all over.

Now traffic is terrible and I stay on my property.

  23. I used to see it once in awhile living near Lancaster, PA which has an Amish population. Outside of the Amish I don’t think there is any other group that travels this way. If you don’t live near one of the areas where they are concentrated then you would never see it.

  24. On horseback? Occasionally. By buggy? Never. I’ve lived all over the Western US. Currently in Utah.

  25. Pennsylvania, I see them daily! Lots of Amish and Mennonite in my town and surrounding towns. Their farms are behind my house and across the street too.

  26. Folks don’t do that here.

I live in the country, so I will sometimes see people riding horses on back roads. They don’t ride them into town though. They might ride them *through* town on parade days, but that’s not the same either.

  27. Not with buggies. But I’ve seen people riding on horseback because i live in a rural area with lots of farmland.

There’s also the tourist horse and carriage thing in New Orleans, but it’s just a tourist attraction.

  28. In the city itself, almost never.

In the countryside near me – occasional horse, no buggy.

Nearest Amish community is about 2 hours away. There’s a very popular rest area at the Iowa-Missouri border run by the Amish, so you see the buggies occasionally there.

They have a big store there selling food, crafts, etc.

  29. I grew up in rural western Virginia. There were (and still are) several Mennonite farms and communities in the surrounding areas. It was rare to see a buggy in the city, but out in the county many stores and shopping areas it was very common to see buggies. Many Mennonite churches in the area had designated buggy parking with hitching posts, and even the local Walmart had a designated buggy parking area.

  30. When I’m up north at my lake cabin I see them almost everyday. The Amish moved into my rural area about 15 or 20 years ago or at least that when I noticed them around. My family has owned our property up there since the 1960s, and every time I see them trotting down the road I imagine kid-me would have been over the moon seeing this.
