Hello, I am interested in the travel habits of different countries. These could also be assumptions.

Which countries do people from your country visit the most? How many countries has the average person from your country visited? Has the average person from your country ever flown on a plane or visited somewhere outside of Europe? Which non-European destinations are the most common? Are there some cities or countries that almost everyone from your country has visited (or at least everyone who travels)? Is it common to take one-day trips to nearby countries? Do most people travel independently or through a travel agency?

  1. Swiss here.

probably Italy and France for summer vacations in Europe. Austria for cheaper skiing

outside Europe it used to be US I would say but less so lately.

Thailand I think is a big one too.

I don’t know what it would be at the moment outside of europe.

  2. In Romania there are still many, especially old people who haven’t left the country or travelled by train, either because they don’t have the money to do so or, mostly, because when they were young they couldn’t leave the country because the communist regime in the country.

The most visited countries I would say are Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey for the sea. We even have a joke saying the island Thassos in Greece is the 42nd romaian county because many romanians go there on vacation. Spain and Italy are also very common destinations because many romanians are already there.

We go on day trips in neighboring countries depending on the region we are from. People from Transylvania, Maramureș and Crișana usually go to hungarian cities such as Debrecen or Nyregyhaza. People from Banat go to either Hungary, espcially Szeged or Serbia, especially Novi Sad and Belgrade. There is even a bike “highway” between Timișoara and Zrenjanin in Serbia but it’s open only in the summer afaik. Usually people from the southern Romania go on day trips in Bulgaria in cities like Ruse, Varna and Veliko Tarnovo.

  3. UK here.

I would say the most common is Spain, Portugal and their associated islands because they are sunny and easy to get to, contrary to our usually terrible weather.

Eastern European city trips like Budapest or Prague are popular too, because they are a bit cheaper but have plenty of things to do.

People with higher incomes, or people who’ve saved for their big trip, will commonly go to Dubai, America (particularly Florida) or Thailand.

  4. Estonia and Sweden for shorter ferry trips/ drives. For longer vacations Spain and Greece has been always popular.

  5. Georgians mostly go to either Greece or Italy.

And honestly I don’t understand why, it’s the most similar culture, climate and lifestyle 😅 what’s the point of traveling if the destination is so similar to a place where you already live 😁

  6. Germany here.

Within Europe, Spain, Italy and Turkey are the most popular foreign destinations, follwing domestic travel.

For long-distance travel, the USA top the list, followed by Thailand and the Dominican Republic.

On average, Germans have visited 9 different countries.

  7. Croats visit Croatia mostly haha…

Other than that, for tourism, Hungary, Slovenia, Austria, Italy… basically countries around us.

  8. Top 10 countries visited by Swedes in 2024 is as follows:

    1. Spain
    2. Denmark
    3. Norway
    4. Germany
    5. Italy
    6. Finland
    7. Greece
    8. United Kingdom
    9. France
    10. United States

The average Swede has definitely been on a plane. Outside of Europe, Thailand is a popular destination for Swedes that want to escape the winter. For one-day trips abroad, it really depends on where you live. Way easier for someone living in southern Sweden to pop over to Denmark over the day than for someone living in Stockholm.

  9. Irish here. Pretty sure its Spain although I hear a lot more people going to places like Turkey and Greece recently due to the backlash against tourism in spain

  10. In Serbia everyone used to go in Montenegro on summer vacation. Now everyone goes to the Greece and Macedonia because its cheaper than Montenegro. Also, people who come from wealthier families mostly visit more expensive countries(for serbian standards) like France,Egypt,Tunisia,UAE,China etc

  11. France, spain, italy. Turkye, greece, nordics, winter austria. No matter where you go you will find us

  12. German here

I’d say the typical summer vacay depends where you’re from, Spain and Greece are common, people from the south go to Austria and Italy, people from the north go to the Netherlands
(of course german “internal” travel like to the mountains or the Nord- or Ostsee are very common as well)

I’d say the average German Gen Z and Millenials have visited serveral countries in Europe and maybe even outside as well, many of them have travelled by plane before they turn 20.

The European destinations are generally very common, outside I’d say the US has been a huge trend, Thailand and Turkey (depending on whether you consider it Europe or not)

Short trips are pretty common and independent travel (train/car and AirBnB) as well

  13. Well, I guess it would be very weird to find an Austrian who hasn’t been to Italy yet and I guess that is also the most popular country to visit.

There are sure a lot of people doing day trips to many of our neighboring countries, it depends of course where exactly you are living. I live close to Slovenia so I have been there many many times. I’ve only been twice to Germany though and once to Switzerland because it is kinda far away. People living close to Germany sure are visiting it way more often than me haha

I guess Turkey is the most popular non-European destination for Austrians.

  14. Dutch people are found everywhere. Its a common joke/story people go to the other side of the planet and still encounter another Dutch person.

However most of the questions depends on someones life and their budget. Dutch people like to visit places in their own country. I would say families either prefer somewhere closs, like The Netherlands itself or neigboring countries when they have little kids. When they grow older Southern Europe is popular, Franc, Italy, Spain. I think most people have flew with an airplane. City trips are popular as well, especially for groups of friends, or families with older kids. Like going to another European capital city.

Going outside Europe is common but it depends on someones budget. I know single people working a well paying job who like to travel and go to the most exotic places. But its less common for a family with kids to go to far away places.

  15. Germany probably for cheaper groceries and petrol. Not me though, I’m to far from the border.

  16. Slovakia – our closest neighbor,
Croatia, Italy, Greece – for summer vacations,
Poland, Austria, Germany – rest of our neighbors

  17. I am Bulgarian, I think it’s Greece, a lot of people go to Greece for the summer holidays, and I know people who bought houses there. Sometimes I think my family is the only one who hasn’t been to Greece ever 🤣
