I was reading a few papers yesterday (I mean, I read papers basically every day, but okay) and it got me thinking… If there’s one difference between research funding in Europe and US, it’s that the US is a lot less conservative and much more open to risky or exploratory projects. Nowadays for European funding you basically already need to have the results before you even apply. When I was reading the paper, I thought, this is so cool but there’s also no way this would have been funded in Europe. It’s not the first time I thought that, but it also has a different meaning now that I don’t know how much of this research will continue to be funded. It’s not like Europe can just carry on where US has left, since as I said, many things here are just not the same.
It’s the last vegan week of this year, and I am a bit tired of it. I didn’t really notice it before (mainly because I have been busy) but I am starting to crave stuff and I miss coffee with milk. Oh well, we’re nearly there.
Do you ever think back to the time when you woke up and there wasn’t some kind of dystopian news? Slowly we’re reaching the point where they don’t even bother to hide their intentions behind some kind of facade. Mainstream comedians get forced out of their job for the most flimsy of reasons. Anti-fascism is now terrorism.
My writing in Finnish can be pretty unhinged at times because I flipflop between written language and more colloquial language like my dialect. I was just writing an email which wasn’t professional, but not to somebody I’m friendly either. I tend to always write using mostly written Finnish (apart from texting), but in situations like this today I sometimes feel it’s too formal so I randomly throw in some words written in dialect there. Like I just wrote the word “katsella”, started feeling it’s all a bit too formal, and then instead wrote “kattella”. So now it’s like sentences of proper Finnish, then one random word written in dialect, and then back to the proper shit.
I’m trying to find an old car stereo. A Philips Driveman AC 022. From what I can gather it was maybe only sold in Italy and it’s a product by Philips Italia in particular. It used to be offered as a factory stereo in an Alfa Romeo I own. But finding one seems to be absolutely impossible. An obscure car stereo from the mid 80s that was possibly only really sold in one country? I might as well forget about it, I guess. There seems to be a pair of them for sale on Ebay right now, but the seller is in Italy and doesn’t offer shipping to Finland and the stereos look to be in horrible condition and probably not working.
There are two really great art museums in my city and both are closed right now. One is prepping a new exhibition which apparently takes a month to do, and the other will be closed for repairs until the beginning of next year. Which is kinda good because the building does smell quite mouldy, but also not good because I really feel like going to an art museum right now. Maybe I should do a trip to Helsinki.
