I 27F am an ethnic minority in my country. When wearing my cultural clothing, lately I have often been asked where I am from. I’m starting to think my standard response might be received as rude.
This question has always confused me on how I should answer.
In the past, people have used this question almost as a euphemism to inquire about my race or ethnicity. I have a relatively ethnically ambiguous appearance, so sometimes people are asking about race… but asking in this indirect way often makes me uncomfortable.
I was born and raised in this country. I’m a full citizen. I’ve never lived anywhere else. So my response lately has been “Here”.
Ex.
“Where are you from?”
“I’m from here.”
As even legally documented minorities are facing persistent threats of deportation and imprisonment here, I feel this response is valid and avoids the question of race altogether.
I’m questioning now if this is rude or if there are any other suggestions about how else to handle this question given the situation I’ve mentioned.
Thanks!
