I recently overheard my wife describing me to some new neighbors who I hadn’t met. They asked her, “Tell us about your husband”, and she responded, “He gets up at 5am and works all the time until 7pm and just eats only birdseed.”
How would you feel if your wife or other family members described you that way, when first describing you to someone, and wasn’t joking?
Not, “he’s a wonderful husband. He has to work a lot, but he graduated from Yale and is a senior partner at McKinsey.”
Not, “he’s really great. He’s done really well in his career at McKinsey and is really fit. So happy that I married him.”
Would you feel insulted and disrespected?
