I’m a college student, and today our apartment complex lost power. I heard a guy who was locked out and went downstairs to open the front door for him. He just walked in without even saying “thank you.”
This has happened to me a few times now. It makes me wonder — is kindness seen as weakness in the U.S.? As a girl, I’ve noticed that when I’m nice or accommodating, people sometimes take it for granted. But when I’m less nice (or even a little cold), suddenly people pay more attention or show respect.
Am I just overthinking this, or is there some truth to it? I don’t want to stop being kind, but it’s frustrating when kindness feels invisible.
