Does Europe have cicadas? I ask because I read a book once that said explorers in the new world were alarmed by the sound of cicadas, which they were unfamiliar with. I'm paraphrasing, and this was years ago. I don't remember what book it was.
But after getting completely drowned out by cicadas last night and looking up solutions to day it seems like cicadas are prevalent throughout Europe too. Is that true? Do they make constant loud buzzing sounds? Are they an annoyance and an occasional pest? I've heard that France and Germany have so few flying insects that most houses don't even bother with screens in the windows and leave the windows open. I can't imagine they have cicada problems if that's true.
