I’ve been with OVO for the last few years. Currently on a variable tariff as I haven’t wanted to fix at a higher rate with all that’s going on in the world with energy pricing (and I’m not fixing now now because we’re planning on moving).

OVO reckon my direct debit just for electricity should be £175 a month to cover our usage, which seems a tad on the high side to me. Over the last year or two OVO have raised my direct debit gradually from around £100 to where we are now.

We live in a 3 bed detached house.

All bulbs in the house are LED. We cook with electricity (oven and induction hob). We have a fridge and a freezer. We don’t use the tumble dryer (maybe once every few months if that). The washing machine goes on a few times a week and the dishwasher on an eco cycle every other day. We don’t have an electric car. Our house is heated using an oil fired boiler (which is approx. 8 years old and serviced annually). Hot water comes on twice a day for around an hour at a time and we have the heating set low throughout the year. My wife and I work from home a couple of days a week.

We do have two kids who use their Xbox/Playstation a fair amount but they’re not to set use rest mode. We do have a 400l fish tank with two filters running but these have been going since I moved in (2020, when my electric bill was £60 a month) (they also had heaters running back then which aren’t used now as I’ve gone to cold water fish).

We’re going out for a couple of hours tomorrow so
I’m going to kill power to the house from the fuse box and see if the meter reading increases whilst we’re out.

Does our electricity usage seem high for what we have?
