One of my colleagues is finally coming back to work this week after her maternity leave, so our team leader has put out a message to us all (there's 10 of us in the team, not counting new mum) asking if we'd all be willing to chip in some money to put towards a gift card for the local shopping centre for said colleague. She's a lovely lady, and I'm glad she's coming back, but the nature of our job means I very rarely actually get to see/work with her.

Now, I've said I'm more than happy to contribute, and said I'd chuck in a tenner (there was no suggested amount or anything in the message), as I didn't want to just assume everyone else in the team would/could contribute and thought it mighy be nice if my colleague had enough to maybe treat herself to something as well as picking up some bits for the new baby.

My team leader seems to think this amount is incredibly generous, but it feels perfectly acceptable to me.

What would you lot say?

[UPDATE]
I don't know who else contributed, or how much, but I've been told we collected around £90 for my colleague. She's incredibly grateful, and says she's really happy to be back at work!

Thanks for all your input, I definitely feel better for chucking in a tenner!
