TIL that the Netherlands is called ‘Tarile de Jos’ in Romanian.
Shops, bakeries etc open very late here,by Italian standards, and they close very early too! If I become a baker in the next life,I might live and work here…
I have been binging Portrait Artist of the Year lately. It’s such a good show, I wish they had it in Germany, too so that I might join 😁 In the heats, nine artists paint three celebrities in groups of three (there are even very famous people like Mark Gatiss and David Tennant). Prior to the show, the contestants are selected based on their submitted self portraits.
I think portraits are so hard to judge. Even something as likeness is so subjective sometimes. And of course, that is not the only thing that matters. But does it matter that much? Sometimes people complain about the heat winners, saying you couldn’t find the sitter in a crowded street by looking at that portrait. But has that ever been the point? [Could you find this dude in a crowded street looking at his portrait?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-Portrait_with_Dishevelled_Hair#/media/File:Self-portrait_(1628-1629),_by_Rembrandt.jpg) [What about this woman?](https://ministry-of-art.pixels.com/featured/portrait-of-deborah-machell-nee-baynes-of-crackenthorpe-english-school-early-18th-century.html) But it is also indeed important because otherwise what’s the point of having a sitter?
If I had a portrait of me painted, I would go for “badly taken photo” kind of realism, I guess. Certainly not photorealism, but also not totally cubist. Maybe impressionistic. But I would still like it to have realistic skin tones and not like green and blue. Maybe I should do another self-portrait. I haven’t drawn one in years.
What about you guys? What would you like your commissioned self-portrait to be like?
It was very interesting revisting a mountain peak with my brother the other day. The decacious forests gradually turned into some unique conifers that looked like they were from the Taiga (well, they were until the ice age ended). My lungs and legs didn’t feel that well at the end of the trail as I was more out of shape than my brother.
There were some things that changed from my last visit: there were quite a alot more Indians and a few more East Asians than I remembered (no idea about their residential status). The surrounding areas are some of the most homogeneous white areas in the US. The peak’s name changed from Clingman’s Dome to Kuwohi recently, several signs having a piece of wood bearing the name stuck on the front of the sign. I have a feeling it’s not going to last long given the former name was a Confederate officer and the latter a native American name; it’s ripe for culture wars.
I spotted and reported a post that seemed to be a recruitment ad for some sort of terrorism, on a travel related subreddit (“contact us, we’ll give you a piece of luggage and all you need to do is keep it at an airport for 30 minutes” sort of stuff). I was told by the moderators that the post doesn’t break reddit rules.
I spotted a great set of pictures someone had taken from a camp with a shelter common where I live. It was removed because it didn’t match the American definition of camping.
Sometimes it’s just best to go for a bike ride. (I hope I won’t touch grass in the literal sense, as that would mean a crash)
