  1. Off to Liege/Luik today. There’s a stairway with some 370 steps, to a citadel and a magnificent view over Liege. The both of us don’t have a great condition, so hopefully we don’t die halfway.

  2. I have a lot of train riding to do today and Friday, which hopefully means I can finish my book. After I got hold of Andy Serkis’ LOTR audiobook, I kind of gave up on my reading 😅

I made morello cherry sorbet yesterday ([obligatory Simpsons)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3TWHwH0EDE) I know how I’m like, rice cooker? I don’t eat so much rice, and it will take counter top space, and you can only make rice with it… and I haven’t bought one. Well, the same goes for the ice cream machine, and probably more. It is good ice cream, though.

Anyhow, from here on, Eurovision rant is incoming.

I am sick and tired of people shitting on Ukraine because “they get empathy votes”. A journalist even asked one of the Ziferblat band members if war is an advantage for them. It would be great if people who think war is an advantage called their national representatives to give Ukraine more support, so there is no more war next year, and it’s a level playing field for everyone. I am sure Ukrainians will be delighted.

Does Ukraine get empathy votes? Yes, probably. Is it their fault? And honestly, if people have something against others showing solidarity to a nation under brutal attack, they should reconsider their priorities. It is a song contest, ffs. And Ukraine does send great songs year after year despite all they’re going through.

I am sure nobody is more eager for the war to be over so that Ukraine can send another “Tick Tock” or Verka Serducka than Ukrainians themselves.

    Rant over.

  3. National pride (which apparently now means watching Sweden’s entry in Eurovision, hell is freezing over) made me watch the first semi-final of ESC yesterday, and I gotta say one thing. I didn’t like mega love the Portuguese entry, but Portuguese is such a great language for singing. Probably the best. I don’t understand it, but the sounds it has is just so perfect for a song, its mixture of vowels and consonants. I’ve seen other people make this point related to bossa nova before too. I haven’t listened to that much Portuguese music, but a lot of music in Brazilian Portuguese I’ve listened to, mostly bossa nova and MBP.

All these non-British or Irish (or Australian) acts that sing in English should ditch that and sing in Portuguese instead if they want to sing a language that’s not their native one. I think Portuguese should become  the lingua franca in song.

This was btw the first time I watched Eurovision since that year Satellite from Germany won. Which was probably a billion years ago.
