Hi all! I'm American and here the governors of larger states, some cabinet positions, senators who are on certain committees, and vice presidents are always touted as potential candidates. Holding one of those jobs is generally seen as a potential precursor to a presidential run. In recent years, there's been more emphasis on senators and vice presidents.

In your country, what, if any, positions are generally seen as making someone a likely candidate to run for president/party leader->prime minister? How has it changed over time?
