  1. The East Asian mainland is quite a bit colder at the same latitude compared to Eastern North America. The 0 C average daily low isotherm in the coldest winter month is around the 34th parallel north which is around the same latitude as northern Atlanta (this city isn’t known to be very cold even late into November), Rabat, someplace just north of Islamabad, and LA. Apparently Shanghai and Brunswick, Georgia (the American Georgia) are near the same latitude. Brunswick has a daily average of 11.4 C in January while Shanghai has a daily average of 4.9 C in the same month. Temperate climates extend to the south of the Tropic of cancer along the Guangdong coast. [This reddit map](https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/ch23th/china_and_the_us_mainland_overlaid_at_the_same/) can help you visualize it. Note at how far south Chinese cities are compared to North American ones.

This is probably due to the strength of the East Asian winter monsoon and the Himalayas blocking cold air into India. Tokyo (35N) is on a island further to the north and offshore and isn’t so affected.

  2. Yesterday’s prompt was “guidebook”. So, funny story (okay it’s not very funny). I wanted to make an onion guidebook. I prepared the drawing, inked them, and let it dry (normally takes about 5 minutes, but I had stuff to do, so I left it for an hour or so). When I wanted to do the watercolor wash, I noticed that the ink was still bleeding. I checked the bottle. It was a new one my mother-in-law gave me, which I hadn’t used before. [Turns out it was water-soluble ink](https://www.deviantart.com/tereyaglikedi/art/Inktober-2024-Day-15-Guidebook-1110501207) (not that it said anything on the bottle). So now I have a bunch of moody onions. I decided to double down and call it the moody onion guidebook (and added some extra splatters). I don’t mind it too terribly. I actually put it on the fridge.

I read in the news this morning that the local animal shelter is running at full capacity, and they can’t take any more animals. Because of this, they’re getting harassment, even threats from people. It is not like they love turning animals down. I wonder what it takes for some people to empathize (or spay/neuter their pets or just don’t get them in the first place). It’s so frustrating.

When I got my cats (from another shelter) I thought they were too strict, but I guess it makes sense since they don’t want to give animals to someone just to take it back a few weeks later when it doesn’t work out (still happens quite a lot, apparently).

Speaking of moody, I really enjoyed [this painting](https://www.reddit.com/r/Watercolor/comments/1g3e1ur/unfolding_gouache_and_watercolour/) on r/watercolor.

Is there a painting you see regularly? Maybe it hangs on your wall, or at your workplace? What does it look like?

  3. On the topic of guidebooks… there is much debate on the travel subs about the ‘death of the guidebook’.

Not just the traditional paper version but even the e-version… fewer people are buying those too,as it is so easy to get free information from the internet these days.

Do you still buy guidebooks before travelling? If so,paper or eBook?

  4. Win of the day: On University Challenge for once I knew all three answers on a topic, while the candidates didn’t get a single one.

… okay, they were questions about German cinema, but still, I’ll take it 🙂
