Dear fellow good Europeans. Recently I read the news, that a bark beetle (Ips typographus) threatens a large spruce forest in one Finnish national park, Koli. Their spreading has been documented along the years, earliest news article I found was 13 years old (1), another from six years ago (2). I'm sorry there's no article in English or other languages about the spread into Koli, but I'll include it anyway (3).
This is well documented phenomenon, and expert says in article about the Koli (3), that this happens because of a warming climate.
I have personally experienced this. A nearby forest has many spruce trees, and not a month goes by, when a huge spruce has fallen. What strikes me odd, is that the spruces crack about 2-4 metres from stump, when usually spruce falls with its roots intact. I think this happens because tree is rotten inside. And all these fallen trees have marks of a bark beetle on them.
I'd like to hear, what are the effects of warming climate in your home country? What have you personally experienced?
Personally, I remember from childhood, that summers were so much milder here. And winters were freezing, with so much snow. There's a saying, that Finnish summer is short but only little snow… Nowadays summers are almost intolerable, to me at least.
