Are bananas always labeled with the variety or commercial type? Or are they sometimes labeled/sold simply as 'bananas'? Are EU countries required to have a variety label on them?

Variety labels are extremely rare in the U.S. so you never know what variety you're getting. Consequently what is sold here is very often a lessor variety or whatever is most available at the time. Many of these are not good for cooking or baking (bitter or metallic taste rather than sweet) but it's nearly impossible to know what you're getting.
