How much influence do cartels have on the US side of the border?

The Mexican cartels are violent and influential in many parts of the Mexico, whether in the underworld and in local politics.

Moreover, some of these cartels have branches in USA working in small groups or cells. But how much influence and power do they have in the US?

What are their main activities in USA?

And are they operating in secrecy similar to the Italian mafia?
