German in the UK. Walked past three pubs near my office on Thursday at 7pm – all rammed. Went out Friday, noticeably quieter. Whats going on.

In Germany there's no concept of a weeknight being "the going out night" – it's weekend or you stay in. The fact that a whole country has quietly agreed Thursday is the unofficial start of the weekend is genuinely fascinating.

We also don't really have pubs. Bars and beer gardens, yes – but the "stand up, hold a pint, talk loudly, all leave by 11" thing doesn't exist back home.

What's the lore? And who is heading out tonight?
