This is mainly for the guys with good/present parents, as absentee parents probably wouldn't offer much advice by nature of their absenteeism.

I had supportive parents who were always available physically/emotionally/financially, but rarely engaged with me in any of those ways proactively. If I came to them for advice (which I didn't do much), they would offer it, but they never did so of their own initiative or launch into the sorts of long, opinionated schpiels I'm prone to as an adult.

This struck me as odd, as I know there are lots of parents, especially fathers to sons, who will tell their kids stuff like "_ is how the world is, and you've gotta _ or the world will _" or "when life _ you, you've gotta _" or other stuff like that. I can't recall a single instance of my parents attempting to impart any hard-earned guidance to me, or even really trying to guide my life choices (e.g. where I attended college or other major life decisions).
