I think there is a correlation between the percentage of people on a street that look and behave conforming to some standards ("normal") and the level of peer pressure in society. Of course, I realize that "normal" would be very different for different cultures and different groups of people, but still, you will sense a significant effort (or lack of it) to conform to some kind of standard.
