So I was carpooling with coworkers for our work trip back to the hotel. We saw what looked like a hitch hiker. I then wanted to start a conversation asking if you would pick up a hitch hiker.

I was the only one who agree to the statement, but the other people strongly disagreed. I proposed that I would like to meet hitch hikers and get to know more about them and their story. My coworkers argued about personal safety.

I felt pretty embarrassed since my answer pretty much ended up saying that I don't value my well-being, risking my life for little to gain, so I didn't entertain my thinking any further, agreed with them, and I became pretty much silent.

The conversation ended up in a net negative that now (I think) my coworkers percieve me a certain negative way (stupid) than if I would have not asked in the first place.

Was that too weird of a topic of where I should have thought out before speaking? Was there any way of recovery since I felt like I killed the vibe? Maybe doubling down to be more interesting or switching the topic?
