Is a sports draft a major event for fans, or is it something people simply monitor in the background or via Twitter?

I like the idea of a draft, but probably only for American sports; it gives them a unique American flavor. However, the way picks are allocated and selected, along with the fact that you can trade them, seems pretty confusing.
