From outside the US, the front porch feels like a very American image. I’m curious how common it really is now, and whether it depends a lot on region.

  1. I’m my experience most people who have a house with a good front porch takes advantage of it.

  2. If you have a porch, it’s a shame to waste it.

ETA: If you don’t have a porch, it’s very common to sit in camp chairs in your garage.

  3. It’s very common in my neighborhood, and I do it myself frequently when the weather is nice. Makes it easy to get to know your neighbors.

  4. People still do, of they have a porch and its nice weather. From about mid-spring to mid-fall my grandfather was always on the porch watching the birds or just reading a book or the newspaper.

  5. Some places. Depends on neighborhood and orientation of the house and proximity to the street.

Growing up we sat out on the back porch to watch the trees sway and lightning bugs flicker in the evening enjoying a nice breeze in tranquil setting among friends and/or family sipping bourbon.

  6. I have a very nice wrap-around front porch on my 117-year old home. My husband and I rebuilt the entire thing a few years. Yes, I absolutely sit out on my front porch as much as I can when the weather is nice.

  7. I sit on my porch whenever weather allows. My boyfriend and I hang out there constantly, sometimes until 2am. I’ll fall asleep on lazy afternoons under a blanket with a book. All of the neighborhood kids play on our porch most afternoons. Porch is half the reason I bought the house!

  8. I live in the middle of nowhere where. My front porch overlooks a 2 acre lawn, then a 40 acre cow pasture. I spend a rather insane amount of time on my front porch.

  9. It’s kind of rare where I live. I used to, but I was like the only one. New Englanders are relatively private people, compared to other places.

  10. In my neighborhood, we do. It’s mostly row homes, and you can chat with your neighbors while sitting on your porch.

  11. In the summer on a nice day, of course. Retires south of the mason Dixon line sometimes are relgious about being outside on the porch a few hours a day.

Weather and climate matter a lot in the culutre. Being from North Dakota originally you are really only getting maybe 2 good weeks of Weather a year, and relaxing on the porch is pretty limited to summer and fall.

  12. It’s less common now that most people have air conditioning. Most houses by me don’t have a front porch, it’s more likely that you have a back porch or deck, and we do use ours quite a bit, but it’s also covered and has a ceiling fan, so it’s usable about 8 months out of the year.

  13. I’m a porch sitter. It’s great. Especially with a glass of sweet tea or lemonade.

  14. Depends a lot on the region. I lived in a very small town in a rural area for a while, and there were a couple of houses with elderly people who would sit out on their front porch all day, just waving and nodding as people drive/walk by.

Now I’m in the suburbs and front porches in general are pretty rare; folks mostly have back porches if anything.

And I hadn’t thought about it until now, but I definitely feel of vibe that it someone is on their front porch, I feel comfortable giving a little wave or a chat or something. But when someone’s on their back porch, unless I know them, it feels more polite to pretend I can’t see them; almost feels like looking in through someone’s window.

  15. I usually sit out the back where the view is better. The front of the house is just the street and the houses across the street.

  16. Yes, it’s common.

I don’t have a front porch, but I sit in the swing on my balcony a lot when the weather is nice. I like to enjoy the fresh air and listen to the birds while I read.

  17. I have seen people sitting in their front porches in pretty much every region.

  18. I’m not sure how this one breaks down regionally…my family has always made use of the front porch if it was available. If the weather’s nice, it’s nice to sit outside and watch the world go by.

Edit: “Nice” weather includes a bit of rain

  19. So excited for it to get warm enough for consistent porch use up here. Front porch with privacy trees + a swing + a drink in hand = peak summer for me.

  20. Front porches aren’t super common where I live (PNW) but it’s pretty common to sit on a back patio or balcony if you have one. The nice weather days here are absolutely amazing and most people want to enjoy it as much as possible.

  21. In Michigan, the front porch was common pre World War 2. You will often see them on older houses, commonly from those built in the late Victorian wra (1900-1920s).

Post World War 2 and with the onset of suburbia, the front pourch went away with in favor of a back yard and privacy. Think of Levitt houses on small 1/8 to 1/4 acre parcels, with the stereotypical white picket fence. (Google “leave it to beaver house”).

  22. my back porch is better suited then my front porch, but we use it like a second living room.

  23. It’s not really a thing in New England. Fewer houses have front porches, and I’ve never seen anyone sitting on one. People sit in the back yard – more privacy.

  24. Sitting on my front porch now watering flowers and admiring my red and white dianthus, moss phlox and clematis vines. All in full bloom.

  25. I’ve never had a front porch, but if I did, I would definitely be on it with a book!

  26. Yes. Lots of people do. But we have a BIG front porch and a beautiful view. I also love being outside during thunder storms and my kids say some of their best memories are on the porch. But when I lived in the city I also sat on porch. As a kid in suburbs we sat on our porch a lot too. Neighbors would come by and chat. But lots of other neighbors had porches they never used. However, now I don’t have a good porch so I sit in my garage near the door opening.

  27. If I had a front porch to sit on I would. I pay way too much for a crap apartment. I like to sit on my back deck/balcony quite a bit in the summer.

  28. Yes, my friends and I sit on the front porch, drink beer, and watch traffic go by all the time.

  29. I *love* my porch. It might be basic as far as porches go but it’s so relaxing to sit outside, in the shade, and watch the world go by.

  30. I don’t have a porch. It’s more like a front patio (same level as the front lawn, no step up). The house is north-facing, so I get shade all day. I have a small table and 2 chairs where I can drink my morning coffee.
