I've heard that americans drink a lot of soda, and often see videos on tiktok about diet coke or pepsi addictions etc lol., I'm wondering if this is something -most- people buy as part of their regular groceries, like something they keep stocked up at home, or if it's more of a sweet treat people get while out or have for movie nights / social stuff? Not asking this out of judgement, I always buy a sweet treat when I go grocery shopping to have something fun at home I just didnt grow up with any soda/pop drinks.

  1. Completely varies. Many Americans drink soda at home, many don’t.

I think that in recent years, the number of soda drinkers has been declining.

  2. It is waning because it is way too expensive. I do buy quite a bit of sparkling water like polar or the equivalent store brand.

A 12 pack that was between 3-5 dollars is now 8-12 dollars. That is a lot!

  3. Yeah. Lots of people buy soda regularly.

I love me some Diet Coke.

Edit to add: I did not grow up drinking soda regularly either. One soda for dinner on Sundays. That’s it. The whole week. Up thru til I moved out of my parents house.

  4. I have maybe 2 sodas a year. Either Coke from Mexico, which is made with cane sugar and doesn’t have the artificial stuff used in the US, or Jarrito’s

  5. As a kid we weren’t allowed soda at home. Only when we went out to eat which wasn’t very often.

  6. It’s pretty common but not universal. I personally almost never buy soda to have at home, although I might have one at a restaurant.

But if I was at someone else’s house and saw some cans of Coke in the fridge I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s very normal.

  7. My dad basically only drinks coca cola, so it’s normal for my mom to buy a lot of it.

My wife and I rarely drink soda, and don’t buy it when grocery shopping.

  8. I can only speak for my family but for us, yes. This can vary though and for many others, this answer would be very different.

  9. We will almost always have soda in the house, but we rarely drink it. A 12 pack lasts a month or so for us. Growing up though, my family did drink soda more commonly.

  10. I don’t buy it weekly but if there’s a big sale going on I’ll stock up enough until the next sale, it’d be really expensive if I bought it weekly.

  11. You’ll get the full spectrum. Some folks always have a can of soda in the fridge, others never touch the stuff. Personally, I’ll have a can or bottle occasionally, but my fridge usually has no soda in it.

  12. I typically have 1 diet soda a day. I’m in my mid 30s. when I was a kid my mom never let me have it.

It’s my only vice. Don’t drink or smoke. So, I allow myself this one guilty pleasure.

  13. It depends on the region. I’m a diet soda drinker. I lived on the West Coast for a year or so and I felt judged for drinking one a day. Now I’m back in the Midwest, I feel pretty normal.

  14. Soda is one thing I cut out of my life, sometimes I’ll have a Diet Coke or diet Dr Pepper if I’m out but never at home. I’m big on flavored seltzers so I usually opt for that.

  15. I haven’t had one in many years. Unfortunately, my parents let me drink Pepsi starting at age 4 or 5. This was in the 70s as you might imagine.

  16. We have an entire beverage fridge allocated to sodas and beers/ciders/seltzers. And in our storage pantry, a shelf or two dedicated to sodas. We buy them in bulk only when they are on sale, so we usually have quite a few 12-packs on the shelf. That being said, we usually drink only one soda each per day, so it takes us a pretty long time to get through the stash.

  17. Yes, I always have a variety of my favorite sodas at home and so does everyone I know. Probably drink more soda than anything else. Also try to drink water throughout the day. But yeah most people I would say have soda at home and keep it constantly supplied.

  18. Judging by the soda aisle at the grocery store, yes. I may not but I see a lot of cases of coke in carts

  19. There is always soda in my home. But I drink about 1 soda a month. So I buy it very infrequently.

  20. Growing up, 1980s, it was fully banned in the house. Unless we had a party, it was never around.

  21. I’m a caffeine addict that hates coffee, and can’t have much tea. I drink an embarrassingly large amount of diet soda.

I don’t buy it every week. I’ve gotten into the habit of waiting until it goes on sale, then buy as much as i can.

  22. I used to, but I stopped liking it. I mostly drink tea, coffee, and water.

  23. I see a lot of young people drinking sugarless (unsweetened) sodas nowadays.

  24. A lot of people do, a lot of people don’t. I used to love it as a kid, but now I rarely drink it, and never at home. It’s just so unhealthy.

  25. No soda is purchased or consumed in my household. It’s not some hard rule or anything like that. Just seems no one in the family craves it or asks for it.

  26. We buy soda with groceries. I pack one can in my lunch.

Occasionally if we’re at a quick service place I’ll have a soda with my meal, especially if it’s included in a combo.

I know people who drink several sodas daily.

  27. I would expect most houses that entertain to have soda stocked even if they don’t really drink it themselves. Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite in a garage fridge is something I see a lot for example (but less so lately with the insane surge in grocery prices.)

  28. We do. We call it pop, not soda, but we buy 2-liter bottles of Diet Coke, Diet Dr Pepper and frequently a no-calorie 7-Up or Sprite every time we’re at the grocery store.

  29. Yes. There are many videos on YouTube now of foreign visitors touring our supermarkets or discount department stores, and being absolutely astonished at how many different varieties of soda we have for sale. They wouldn’t stock 20 to 30 meters of soda if it wasn’t selling.

  30. I bought it more frequently when my kids were younger and they’d have some once or twice a week. Now I only buy it if I’m having guests over. My husband and I don’t drink it. He’s strictly water and I’m water and iced tea.

However, I know plenty of people that buy at least a case a week for two people and more if the family is bigger.

Sometimes I wonder if we’re the strange ones because if you came over unannounced your options would be water, coffee or tea but when I’m in other people’s houses they’re fridge is full of different drinks and juices and soda and iced coffees.

  31. Every home I’ve been to has soda in it and every event I go to they always have cooler of soda.

  32. Cokes are considered a beverage,  not a sweet treat.   To add to your confusion,  coke and Pepsi and other soft drinks also make sugar free versions.

  33. When I was a kid in the 80s/90s, every house seemed to have soda. Usually a questionably flat 2L bottle. Now, barely anyone has it in my circle.

I think, as we’ve all learned more about things like diabetes, we’ve managed to curb SOME habits.

Then again, I also grew up in a much more blue collar environment than I now live, so I don’t know how that factors in.
