My dad has never openly talked about his interests, but after I got him a father's day gift last year, he has started to ask me about what I'm getting him next.

The thing is… I really don't know. And I feel bad about it.

I know what he's liked in the past, like photography, fishing (still does, but doesn't go fishing alone, so, hardly ever fishes), video games etc.

Nowadays he's very vague about his interests, and he hardly ever buys anything for himself unless it's a new phone or a speaker or some crazy expensive cooking/grilling equipment. I feel a lot of pressure to get him something good, because he complains about the cringe mugs or the 40th pair of socks that he gets from my mom, and no one else buys him stuff other than her or me.

My family has also never openly talked about our interests, so bringing it up straightforwardly would be awkward.

So, how can I get him to open up about his interests?
